DIY Stained Concrete Floor

After too many years of carpet in our bedroom I made the rash decision to rip it all out.  We wanted to add the dark tile that looked like wood that we had installed in the rest of the first floor but it wasn’t in the budget yet.  With our dogs I was 100% positive that I didn’t want carpet again- short or long term.

Decided on stained concrete floor for the master until we could afford to tile.  I read some blogs and especially liked this one https://dibbledabblelife.blogspot.com/2011/07/diy-painted-stained-concrete-living.html?m=1

I cleared all of the furniture out of the room then tore out all of the carpet and tack strips over a weekend.  You then have to sweep, vacuum, sweep, scrub and get it really clean.  Next I filled in divots and cracks.  EXHAUSTING weekend from h*!!.  Now way to sugar coat it.  This was allllllll sweaty labor.

I picked up all of my supplies from Sherwin Williams.  I used a semi-transparent decorative concrete stain in Cocoa.   You basically bush edge the room with stain then pour it into the garden sprayer and spritz it all over the floor. You can add more in areas that you want darker etc.  There are lots of color variations right away and they became more pronounced as it dried.

You can see the product and the bare concrete here.

Presenting stained concrete! It requires a drying time of 4-6 hours before adding a wet look sealer on top.

I sealed the floor with a top coat using brush around the edges and then a roller.   I really liked the variations and it blended with our dark tile flooring in the rest of the house.   It was a great solution for the time being and I was always happy with the concrete over carpet.

We finally found the budget to tile the master…. and ended up listing the house a month later. Sigh.

If you’ve ever wondered what stained concrete looks like or how to do it now you know:)
